"I love Leeds, and I think that the Town Hall where the lions are is wonderful and atmospheric. It was a great honour to do the lion! I am a Yorkshireman through and through, and I see Yorkshire people as having the spirit of lions! ”

Brian Blessed

Guarding Leeds' Town Hall, one big weathered lion is about to speak his mind. He and his three stone companions have stood watch over the city from the Town Hall steps since 1867. Created by sculptor William Day Keyworth Jr (1843-1902), this lion has seen many things in his time.

Local legend tells that, very occasionally, the Town Hall clock strikes thirteen. When this happens, everything freezes as if time has stood still - and then the lions roam the streets of Leeds! Afterwards they settle back into their previous positions as though nothing had happened...but if you look closely enough, you can tell that their facial expressions have changed!
